Chelsea midfielder Gallagher, currently with the England squad at the Euros, recently spoke to talksport about his experiences and the competition within the team.
On being substituted at halftime against Slovenia:
“Of course it doesn’t feel great because you always want to play more for the team, but starting for England was very exciting. It was a tough game, we didn’t create many chances. I understand the manager made a change with Mount to try something different, and that’s completely fair. Southgate spoke to me first at halftime, then told the team about the substitution.”
On the competition in the England midfield:
“We all bring different qualities, and so far the manager has chosen the players he thinks are right for each match. For my part, I always try to bring energy, both offensively and defensively. Arnold is great with his passing, Mount is very confident and can control the tempo of the game.”
About rumors of a switch to a back-three system:
“There won’t be any new tactical changes for England, whether it’s a back three or four, we’ve all worked on these setups before and are very familiar with them. Over the years, England has used many midfielders, but you know they’re all doing similar jobs.”
