Recently, Boca Juniors announced that goalkeeping coach Fernando Gaioso has unfortunately been diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), leading to the termination of his coaching career.
ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive and fatal rare condition. There is currently no known cure. Only 10% of those affected by the disease survive for more than 10 years, with very few living beyond 50 years, such as renowned physicist Stephen Hawking.
At 53 years old, Gaioso boasts over two decades of experience in the profession, having served as a goalkeeping coach at clubs including Tigre, Nacional de Uruguay, and Racing Club de Argentina. He first worked at Boca Juniors between August 2014 and February 2016, and returned to the club in January 2020 to resume his role as goalkeeping coach, a position he held until now.
