On June 28, UEFA’s official website announced the refereeing team for the UEFA Euro Round of 16 match between England and Slovakia. The game will be officiated by Turkish referee Cüneyt Çakır, with Germany’s Marco Fritz serving as the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
It is worth noting that Çakır was in charge of the group stage match between Belgium and Slovakia in this tournament, where he disallowed two goals from Romelu Lukaku, including one due to a marginal handball decision following an assistant referee’s and VAR’s intervention. Slovakia eventually won 1-0, with Çakır’s decisions sparking some controversy after the match.
Furthermore, Marco Fritz, who served as the VAR assistant in the Belgium vs Slovakia fixture, will assume the role of the VAR for this encounter. The two assistant referees will also be the same as those from that earlier game.
