This week, the DP World Tour arrives at Hagenäs Vastholmen Golf Club in Sweden for its third stop of the European season – the Volvo Car Skåne Mixed Tournament. With a $2 million purse up for grabs, competitors gear up for the first round on June 6th. Read on for highlights of the event.
A Pioneering Event
The fourth edition of the Volvo Car Skåne Mixed Tournament, jointly sanctioned by the DP World Tour and the Ladies European Tour, showcases inclusivity in global golf. A remarkable 78 men and 78 women will compete side by side for the coveted title and trophy.
In 2021, Northern Ireland’s Jonathan Cauley won the inaugural title, followed by the first-ever female DP World Tour champion, Linnea Grönmark, in 2022. Last year, Englishman Dale Whitnall clinched his first DP World Tour crown in the tournament’s third edition.
Defending Champion
After a 14-year career and 106 matches, Dale Whitnall triumphed with a three-shot lead in the 2022 event, securing his maiden DP World Tour title. Currently ranked #102 in the Dubai Rankings, Whitnall recently participated in the European Open in Hamburg, where he made it to the weekend at the challenging Green Eagle course. In that tournament, he finished T60.
In 2022, Whitnall started with an eagle in the first round, setting the tone for his victory. A 61-stroke second round saw him six shots ahead, but he had to fend off Sean Crocker’s challenge on the final day, ultimately securing the win with a birdie at the 17th hole.
Chinese Pair in Action
Both Li Haotong and Wu Ashun joined forces at the European Open last week before heading to Sweden for the Volvo Car Skåne Mixed Tournament. Despite facing a tough course in the previous event, neither player advanced to the weekend, bowing out with disappointment.
Li Haotong ranks #61, while Wu Ashun is at #103 on the Dubai Rankings. With renewed determination, let’s hope they bounce back from the challenging course and deliver impressive performances in this week’s competition.
