On August 6th, the Olympic men’s basketball quarter-final match was held between Germany and Greece.
Game Report
In the first quarter, Mitoglou started off actively, scoring himself and then stealing the ball to assist Vucap for a fast-break score. Vogtman of Germany scored on a cut, Mitoglou hit another running shot, and Giannis Antetokounmpo completed an alley-oop dunk! Papanikolaou added two points with a putback, giving Greece a 10-2 lead to start the game. Franz Wagner scored on a layup, while Spanoulis drove for a score. Giannis Antetokounmpo added four more points, extending Greece’s lead to 18-6! Schroder hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer to stop the bleeding, Spanoulis responded with a three-pointer of his own. Moritz Wagner made a running shot. At the end of the first quarter, Greece led 21-11.
In the second quarter, Moritz Wagner scored on a drive, Babu hit a three-pointer, Mitoglou scored on a mid-range shot, and Moritz Wagner and Babu continued to score, bringing Germany within 20-25. Tolios hit a three-pointer to stop the bleeding for Greece, Franz Wagner made a running shot, Timmann and Bonga combined for five points inside and outside. Giannis Antetokounmpo scored on a drive, Vogtman also hit a three-pointer, Schroder scored on a drive, and Germany narrowed the gap to 32-33. Vucap hit a mid-range shot, Franz Wagner scored on a strong drive, and Ties scored on a dunk. At halftime, the score was tied at 36.
In the third quarter, Schroder hit a three-pointer, Giannis Antetokounmpo responded with a mid-range shot. Vogtman scored on a dunk, Vucap hit a three-pointer, tying the game at 41. Papanikolaou and Vucap hit consecutive three-pointers, followed by a series of misses from both sides. Bonga hit a three-pointer, Franz Wagner scored on a fast-break dunk and then hit a three-pointer, putting Germany ahead 50-47. Giannis Antetokounmpo scored on a mid-range shot, Timmann added a putback dunk. Timmann then scored again on a dunk, followed by a series of free throws. Near the end of the quarter, Bonga hit another three-pointer. At the end of the third quarter, Germany led 59-52.
In the fourth quarter, Franz Wagner committed an offensive foul, Greece also turned the ball over. Franz Wagner made a shot, Giannis Antetokounmpo scored on a strong drive. Both teams continued to turn the ball over, Schroder re-entered the game. Giannis Antetokounmpo hit a buzzer-beater. The teams had low offensive efficiency in the early part of the fourth quarter, Timmann made two free throws, helping Germany lead by nine points. Giannis Antetokounmpo was fouled and went to the free-throw line, making one of two. Franz Wagner hit a floating shot for two more points, and Germany maintained control of the game, Schroder hit a deep three-pointer at the buzzer, effectively sealing the game.
In the end, Germany defeated Greece 76-63.
