On August 20th, the 2026 Women’s Basketball World Cup Qualifying Tournament will see Mexico’s women’s basketball team face off against Mozambique’s team. With the home advantage, Mexico is certainly hoping to secure a win to start their campaign on a high note in this World Cup qualifying tournament.
In Group B of the Mexico zone, there are four teams: Montenegro, New Zealand, Mozambique, and Mexico. Among these, Montenegro ranks 22nd globally, New Zealand 26th, Mozambique 33rd, and Mexico 45th. Based on rankings and strength, Montenegro and New Zealand appear stronger, but with Mexico playing at home, the race for group advancement remains quite unpredictable.
Mexico’s women’s basketball team has participated in the World Cup three times before, all during tournaments hosted in the Americas. They have not competed since 1975. However, Mexico’s recent performances have been encouraging, giving fans hope.
In 2022, Mexico’s women’s basketball team won the COCABA Women’s Championship and secured second place in the 2022 Central America and Caribbean Women’s Championship. At the 2023 Women’s Basketball AmeriCup, they had one win and four losses, defeating the Dominican Republic for their sole victory, and were eliminated by Brazil in the quarterfinals. The core player for Mexico is forward Claudia Ramos, who averaged 10.4 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2 assists per game during the AmeriCup.
Mozambique has only qualified for the World Cup finals once, in the 2014 Women’s Basketball World Cup, where they lost all three of their matches and were eliminated from the group stage. In the 2023 African Women’s Basketball Championship, Mozambique finished fifth, having beaten Guinea and Ivory Coast. They were eliminated by Nigeria in the quarterfinals, losing by just seven points, despite Nigeria being a strong team that performed excellently at the Paris Olympics. Center Tamara Ceda is the team’s key player, averaging 19.2 points and 11.8 rebounds per game in the African Championship.
