Recently, Evan Fournier explained his decision to return to Europe and join Olympiacos after playing 12 seasons in the NBA.
In an interview, Fournier said, “I’ve been considering returning to Europe for a while. If I could experience some intense emotions in a place filled with passion and enthusiasm, I would definitely agree. I had hoped to achieve more in the NBA, but there you can’t fully control your own destiny. After the Olympics, I told my agent that I really wanted to return to Europe, and Olympiacos was my top choice.”
Fournier signed a two-year contract with Olympiacos, with a player option for the 2026-27 season. Despite having played 724 games in the NBA and representing the French national team in multiple FIBA events, this is his first time participating in the EuroLeague. His goal is to help Olympiacos win the EuroLeague championship.
Fournier also stated, “I know this isn’t the NBA, but every summer I return to play in the FIBA system. Here, I can flexibly switch between the 1 to 3 positions, which will give me more playing opportunities. My most important goal is to win the EuroLeague.”
In the interview, Fournier mentioned that Paris Basketball Club was his second choice.
“This was my second choice because playing at home brings intense emotional experiences,” he explained. “But they were not interested, so it was quickly ruled out.”
Fournier also admitted that the style of play at Olympiacos deeply attracted him.
He further explained, “I like that this team is not superstar-oriented but emphasizes off-ball movement, teamwork, hard work, and the value of winning. I don’t want to go through the boredom of the last two years in the NBA again; I want real competition, a place where I can be myself.”
Fournier also revealed that he turned down an invitation from the Wizards because he had no interest in playing for a ‘losing team.’ He chose to develop overseas rather than join the Wizards.
He said, “I had contact with several contending NBA teams, especially the Bucks, but ultimately we didn’t reach an agreement. Then, I received a two-year offer from a team, but this team wasn’t appealing to me. They wanted me to mentor young players, and I no longer want to do that.”
It is understood that the mysterious team was the Washington Wizards.
