On June 9th, local time, the 2024 French Open crowned a new men’s singles champion. Third seed Carlos Alcaraz, endorsed by Rolex, overcame Alexander Zverev with a score of 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2, claiming his maiden Roland Garros title and his third Grand Slam victory overall. Alcaraz also became the youngest male player to win a Grand Slam on hard, grass, and clay surfaces.
At the beginning of the match, both players appeared nervous, failing to hold serve in the opening two games. Alcaraz then demonstrated superior baseline play, breaking Zverev twice in the fifth and ninth games to secure the first set 6-3. In the second set, Alcaraz experienced a dip in form, and after being tied at 2-2, Zverev took four consecutive games to level the match at 6-2.
With the score tied, the third set reached a crescendo. The Spaniard broke Zverev’s serve in the sixth game without dropping a point and led 5-2. However, the tide turned as Zverev won five straight games, breaking Alcaraz’s serve twice to snatch the set 7-5 and take a 2-1 lead in sets.
In the fourth set, Zverev’s composure wavered, resulting in unforced errors. Seizing the opportunity, Alcaraz capitalized with three breaks of serve to comfortably take the set 6-1 and force a deciding fifth set. In the final set, Alcaraz broke Zverev’s serve in the third and seventh games, eventually triumphing 6-2 to clinch his first French Open men’s singles title.
