On June 25th, the Los Angeles Lakers officially announced the hiring of J.J. Redick as their new head coach. At 40 years old, this marks Redick’s first time serving as an NBA head coach. He becomes the 29th head coach in franchise history.
Redick previously worked as an ESPN commentator and has no prior experience coaching an NBA team.
Earlier, renowned insider Wojnarowski reported that Redick would sign a four-year deal with the Lakers.
Per Shams Charania, Redick agreed to a four-year contract with the Lakers, worth approximately $8 million per season.
According to earlier reports, the Lakers were seeking a head coach who could establish a long-term presence, manage the locker room, hold players accountable, and consistently prepare game plans. Sources indicated that the organization believed Redick was a candidate capable of fulfilling these requirements, with Lakers officials being “enamored” with Redick and his potential as a coach.
Redick played 15 seasons in the NBA for six different teams, with his most notable tenures coming with the Orlando Magic and the Los Angeles Clippers. Over his career, he averaged 12.8 points per game, shot 41.5% from three-point range, 44.7% from the field, and 89.2% from the free-throw line.
