On June 24th, the WNBA regular season continues with the Washington Mystics hosting the Dallas Wings.
The Mystics started the season poorly with a 12-game losing streak, but they managed to secure their first win against the Dream, now holding a 3-12 record, still sitting at the bottom of the league standings. However, the team has shown signs of improvement lately, winning three of their last four contests, including a dominant victory over the Wings. In that game, they scored 11 three-pointers, with Emma Meesseman contributing 23 points and 9 rebounds in a 97-69 blowout win.
Although the Mystics have been showing positive signs recently, there are still issues to address. Their offensive output is inconsistent, averaging just 77.8 points per game, which remains their biggest concern. Additionally, they commit 15.4 turnovers per game, often surrendering possession. Defensively, they allow an average of 81.8 points and struggle on the boards, ranking towards the bottom of the league. Despite the lack of a standout scorer, players like Myisha Hines-Allen, Ariel Atkins, and Betnijah Laney provide consistent contributions.
The Wings, on the other hand, have mirrored the Mystics’ early-season struggles, suffering a 10-game losing streak after their latest defeat to the Mystics, dropping their record to 3-12, currently tied for 11th place. This clash pits the two teams at the bottom of the standings, and another loss would push the Wings into sole possession of last place. Given their recent form, it seems unlikely that the losing skid will end anytime soon, possibly extending to an 11-game losing streak.
The Wings’ performance this season has been highly unpredictable, with star player Arike Ogunbowale having inconsistent outings. She scored 31 points against the Sky but managed only 6 points on 11-of-3 shooting against the Mystics. Furthermore, guard Marina Mabrey’s injury adds to the offensive woes for Dallas. The team’s defense has also been subpar, conceding an average of 86.7 points per game, the second-highest in the league. A win would likely require the opposing team to have an off night.
This is a back-to-back contest, with the Mystics coming off a convincing 97-69 win yesterday. Playing at home once more, they will be looking to maintain their momentum and potentially climb out of the last-place spot.
