According to The Athletic, the police in Düsseldorf, Germany, are currently investigating a reported theft of England player Ivan Toney’s father’s watch during the team’s intense match against Serbia in the group stage.
In their opening game, England triumphed over Serbia at the Veltins Arena. Ivan Toney’s father had traveled to Germany to support his son and was staying at the Meria Hotel in Düsseldorf, a popular accommodation for the families of English players, including parents and partners. The hotel is one of the official Euro 2020 accommodations.
Toney’s father lodged a complaint with the hotel about the loss of his expensive timepiece, which prompted the local police to intervene. A police spokesperson confirmed to the media that they were aware of the incident and had initiated a criminal investigation, with the criminal division handling the case.
Speaking to the media, Roger van Zanten, the regional director of the Meria chain’s operations in Western Germany, affirmed that all hotel staff were cooperating fully with the police investigation into the theft.
Ivan Toney, aged 28, plays for Brentford and was suspended for eight months due to a gambling scandal earlier this year. However, upon his return, he scored four Premier League goals and earned a call-up to the tournament’s 26-man squad by manager Gareth Southgate. Reflecting on his inclusion, Toney said, “I wasn’t certain about it, but I believe the coach saw how my presence could bring a new dimension to the team.” Unfortunately, Toney remained on the bench for both of England’s group stage matches so far.
Currently in Group C, England has accumulated four points after two games. If they secure top spot in the group, they will advance to Gelsenkirchen for the first round of the knockout stage from there.
