In the Euro Cup, competition extends beyond teams and players; fans are also in a battle. And it’s not just about fan support or chanting – it’s about drinking prowess too! The Sun reported that when English fans arrived in Cologne for England’s match against Slovenia, they found all bars depleted of alcohol by Scottish fans.
Following Scotland’s 1-1 draw with Switzerland in Cologne a few days earlier, an estimated 100,000 thirsty – and thirsty – Scottish fans, also known as “drinkers,” guzzled down around one million pints (approximately 568,000 liters) of various beverages within three days. This depletion left the city’s bars struggling to restock.
The manager of “Corkonian Irish” on Cologne Square said, “Scottish fans drink everything – beer, Guinness, vodka… our cellars were empty. Other bars have seen record beer sales, even more than during Oktoberfest. Now we’re working hard to get more deliveries from breweries so we can serve drinks to English fans.”
A staff member from “Papa Joe’s Biersalon” nearby echoed the sentiment, “The Scottish fans showed just how much they can drink. Our supplies are severely lacking; we need more beer, or English fans might go without.”
The Sun highlighted that English fans are ready to face the challenge – before the match against Slovenia, they aim to prove their superior drinking skills, assuming bars can manage the restocking. Media noted that this situation is due to Cologne being one of the closest host cities to the British Isles, attracting a large number of both English and Scottish supporters, with approximately 50,000 English fans setting a record attendance for the game.
