In a recent interview with The Guardian, Brazilian footballing icon Kaka discussed England’s prospects in the upcoming Euros.
“Southgate’s team narrowly missed out last time,” Kaka remarked. “I believe their opportunity has arrived. England is getting closer to the title, with talented individuals and a strong squad. Losing the final to Italy was heartbreaking, but the team is more mature now.”
“Moreover, the Premier League is the best league in the world. It involves many English players, but also players from around the globe, which has helped the development of many in Southgate’s squad. So, I truly believe England is maturing, and it could be their time to win in Germany.”
Despite Kaka’s optimism, concerns over England’s defense have been a major talking point among fans. The absence of Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw’s fitness issues, and the lack of overall experience at the back have created vulnerabilities. Furthermore, the attacking mindset of England’s midfield, including players like Rice, Bellingham, and Foden, has occasionally left the defense exposed. However, Kaka insists there’s no cause for concern.
“Personally, I don’t see England’s defense as vulnerable,” he said. “In fact, I believe England possesses exceptional defenders, with outstanding players across their backline. Moreover, the issue isn’t about one player or a specific defensive line; it’s about collective performance in the entire game. It starts with the forwards, as a defensive system actually begins from the front.”
