German goalkeeper Noël stated on Monday during a press conference that he and potential successor Marc-André ter Stegen must “remain united,” adding that he has not paid attention to criticism following an error in a friendly against Greece prior to the Euros.
Leading up to the Euros, Noël faced scrutiny for a mistake that led to a goal in a match against Greece, compounded by a severe knee injury that kept him out of the national team for an extended period. This error sparked discussions about the succession at the goalkeeper position under Coach Nagelsmann. Despite this, Nagelsmann has continued to show faith in Noël, who started in the opening Euro match versus Scotland.
“I haven’t read anything (about the criticism). I always analyze things with those in charge. We discuss everything, watch videos, and evaluate based on that. So, I haven’t given the debate much thought. What’s important is the trust relationship between the coach, the players, and me. There’s a lot of trust there.”
“Ter Stegen? It’s crucial that we stay united. We have a strong squad, great players in every position. Controversy doesn’t help us at that spot. The goalkeeper position also requires collective effort.”
“Third-choice goalkeeper Jan Löricht? His personality fits perfectly with our team. We’re very happy and grateful to have him involved. He enjoys it too. Retirement from the national team? I can’t say yet, let’s talk after the Euros.”
