In the early hours of the morning, England secured a 1-0 victory over Serbia in their opening Euro group match, with England’s goalkeeper Jordan Pickford starting and playing the full 90 minutes. Despite his impressive performance, football legend Dietmar Hamann has expressed concerns.
On the podcast “In The Zone,” Hamann commented, “What worries me about England is Pickford. He’s an excellent goalkeeper, but at times his fiery temperament can be disappointing. In a major tournament where you might have to play seven games or more, there will be setbacks, and you need a goalkeeper who can steady the ship emotionally.”
“I think Pickford’s behavior is the opposite of that, and that’s what concerns and questions me. I don’t believe England can win a Euros or any major tournament with Pickford as their leader,” he added.
Pickford, aged 30, is one of Southgate’s most trusted players, having rarely missed a significant international match under his manager. He has now represented England in 61 matches, nearing the record for a goalkeeper’s appearances in major tournaments for the national team.
