FIFA introduced new rules regarding added time during the 2022 World Cup, which have led to a noticeable increase in stoppage minutes in the English Premier League (EPL) this season. Data analysis shows that Liverpool has benefited more than any other club.
While UEFA has not adopted these regulations in its competitions, the EPL has embraced them. Researchers from StatsChecker have found that Liverpool gained six points due to extended stoppage time, Arsenal and Chelsea each picked up four points, Manchester City lost two points, and relegated Sheffield United dropped as many as five points because of additional time.
This season, Liverpool scored eight goals in injury time, with Nunez netting match-winners against Newcastle and Nottingham Forest. Elliott and Diaz also scored equalizers in stoppage time, while Matip unfortunately scored an own goal during added time, costing Liverpool points.
