According to the British newspaper The Telegraph, discussions between Manchester United and Erik ten Hag over a contract extension have not progressed as smoothly as anticipated, with five main areas of disagreement.
Difference One: Contract Length
The report reveals that Ten Hag’s current deal with Manchester United is set to expire next summer. He is seeking an extension until 2027, a two-year renewal, rather than just one additional year.
Difference Two: Transfer Influence
Since taking charge at Manchester United, Ten Hag has had significant input in transfer decisions. Notably, he pushed for the pursuit of Frenkie de Jong, despite the Dutchman’s reluctance to leave Barcelona. Fourteen weeks later, the signing of Antony at a premium price of £30 million ensued. While his initial contract included a “veto” on transfers, the Ineos group prefers the recruitment process to be handled by the recruitment team, a change Ten Hag might find difficult to accept, moving from having a “veto” to merely providing “advice.”
Difference Three: Role Transformation
The Ineos group prefers a partnership with a head coach rather than a manager. Ten Hag currently holds the position of manager, and it remains uncertain whether the Ineos group will insist on altering his role. However, it is clear that his successor will likely hold the title of coach.
Difference Four: Formation
Ten Hag is not in favor of the suggestions made by the Ineos group regarding the team’s formation. He prefers a flatter midfield setup, whereas the group leans towards a more wing-oriented tactical approach. Additionally, Ten Hag does not appreciate external input on his choice of formations.
Difference Five: Coaching Staff
The Ineos group intends to continue reshaping Ten Hag’s coaching staff. Assistants like Alfred Schreuder and Steve McClaren could face changes, with new additions potentially being brought into the existing structure.
