In the opening match of the European Championship early this morning, hosts Germany thrashed Scotland 5-1. Bayer Leverkusen’s star Wirtz scored the first goal for Germany, making him, at 21 years and 42 days old, the youngest player ever to score for the German team in a Euro tournament.
Furthermore, Wirtz joins Gerd Müller (1972) and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (1980) as the third German player to score the first goal of a Euro competition.
