On June 14, according to Mundo Deportivo, Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa is searching for a new club to maintain his form and secure a spot in the upcoming World Cup on home soil. Both Brazilian powerhouse Corinthians and Major League Soccer (MLS) newcomer San Diego FC are interested in the seasoned shot-stopper.
In the recently concluded 2023/24 season, Ochoa couldn’t help Salernitana avoid relegation from Serie A, with injuries sidelining him for the final few matches of the campaign. After Salernitana’s descent to Serie B, Ochoa left as a free agent. Convincing himself that he can still participate in the 2026 CONCACAF World Cup in North America, Ochoa realizes he needs to remain competitive at a high level to make that dream a reality. Not being included in Mexico’s Copa América squad, his main focus this summer is finding a new club.
Despite turning 39 next month, Ochoa isn’t short of suitors. Spanish second division playoff contender Real Oviedo has expressed interest, but according to TUDN, Ochoa has turned down their offer. Recently, Brazilian outlet ge.globo reported that the former América goalkeeper has received an approach from Corinthians, whose first-choice goalkeeper, Cassio, has departed for Palmeiras. With backup goalkeeper Johnatan Kolina attracting interest from Nottingham Forest, there’s uncertainty in Corinthians’ goalkeeping ranks, making Ochoa an attractive proposition.
Furthermore, San Diego FC, set to debut in MLS in 2025, has also been linked with Ochoa. The club aims to bolster its roster with experienced and recognizable players to attract fans. However, the lack of competitive action for the next half-year could be a deterrent for Ochoa. Should he decide to join San Diego FC, Ochoa would reunite with his former Mexico national team colleague Jesús “Tecatito” Corona.
