Gundogan has only been with Barcelona for a year, but he may now be leaving, which has surprised his former German national team teammate Toni Kroos. Kroos made a simple comment on the well-known transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano’s related tweet: “Wow,” along with three emojis to express his astonishment.
Gundogan joined Barcelona on a free transfer last summer and was seen as a significant addition to the team at that time. However, following the end of the 2023/24 season and with Xavi’s departure, new head coach Hansi Flick decided not to use Gundogan in the new season, believing that he did not meet the requirements of the high-pressing tactics in midfield.
If Gundogan leaves Barcelona, the club could free up salary space to register new players. However, this also means that Barcelona will lose a world-class player without gaining any economic benefits from it.
According to Romano, Manchester City is working hard to reach an agreement with Gundogan’s agent, hoping to re-sign the German star. Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola has already agreed to Gundogan’s return.
During his career, Gundogan played for Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City, achieving numerous honors before joining Barcelona, including a runner-up finish in the Bundesliga, a DFB-Pokal win, a Premier League title, an FA Cup victory, and a UEFA Champions League title.
On August 20, Gundogan announced his retirement from the German national team to focus more on club competitions.
