On September 1st, in the fourth round of La Liga which concluded in the early hours of the morning, Athletic Bilbao suffered a last-minute defeat at home against Atlético Madrid, losing 0-1. They have only managed 1 win, 1 draw, and 2 losses, accumulating 4 points since the start of the season.
After the game, forward Nico Williams spoke to reporters and addressed the transfer rumors that circulated over the summer.
Nico stated, “Everyone knows what Athletic Bilbao means to me. I’ve been here since I was 11 years old, and this is a decision made together with my family. Some of the rumors are true, others are lies. My heart belongs to Athletic, I’m very happy here, it’s the best place for me to grow, I need to improve myself, and Athletic Bilbao is everything; it has given everything to me and my family.”
When asked if he would join another team after staying for one more year, Nico responded, “This year, I will be fully committed to the game, striving to win titles and reach the top with Athletic Bilbao, and then we’ll see what happens in the future.”
Previously, there were rumors that Barcelona would activate Nico Williams’ release clause to bring him to Barcelona to form a Spanish wing duo with Yamal, but the transfer did not materialize.
