August 18, according to foreign media ESPN reports, Pochettino is unable to take over as the head coach of the U.S. team until his salary dispute with Chelsea is resolved.
It is understood that former U.S. U20 national team coach Mikey Varas will temporarily lead the U.S. men’s national team during the upcoming September international window.
Even if Pochettino is officially appointed as the head coach of the U.S. men’s national soccer team before the transfer window, Varas will still be in charge of coaching, giving Pochettino time to get acquainted with the U.S. Soccer Federation and the current state of soccer in the United States.
Notably, the dispute between Pochettino and his former club Chelsea remains unresolved. The Blues still owe Pochettino his salary, and he cannot sign a contract to take over the U.S. national team until the issue is resolved.
Sources told ESPN that no final agreement has been signed by both parties, and the U.S. Soccer Federation board has not signed any agreements either. Sources added that a regular board meeting is scheduled for Friday, August 23, but a special meeting may be held before then to finalize the appointment.
