According to Portuguese newspaper Record on July 30, Argentine central defender Otamendi recently admitted that he would very much like to return home to play for River Plate, but given the unstable situation in Argentina, the possibility is largely ruled out.
Otamendi acknowledged that he is “very keen” to play for River Plate, stating: “I really want to play for River Plate because I am a fan of the club. My fellow Argentinians have always been good to me, but I also have to think about my family. I’ve been in Europe for many years now, and my only concern is my children, ensuring their safety. Considering the current situation in Argentina, returning becomes very complicated. I still have one year left on my contract with Sporting Lisbon, and I’m very happy with the current state of the club.”
Otamendi also expressed understanding of Di Maria’s decision not to return to Rosario to play, but he also candidly spoke about his desire to return home. He said: “The situation is very complex, and as a player, you always have to put your family and your children’s safety first. Argentina is currently going through a difficult period. When I was single, I wouldn’t have had too many concerns, but after starting a family, if there are threats to security, you have to weigh things carefully.”
Otamendi also revealed details about turning down the opportunity to reunite with Gallardo at River Plate: “Marcelo wanted me to return to River Plate. I told him that I had already spoken to the president and explained my thoughts and the reasons for declining. I still have a contract with Benfica, and my family is my top priority at this stage.”
