According to reports, De Gea’s desire for £80,000-a-week wages has so far prevented him from signing with a new club.
Last year, De Gea had originally agreed to reduce his weekly salary from £375,000 to £200,000 to renew his contract with Manchester United, but due to manager Ten Hag’s request to sign Onana, United were eventually forced to let De Gea go.
After being unemployed for half a year, De Gea received several offers in January this year, from Newcastle, Nottingham Forest, Real Betis, and Saudi clubs. However, De Gea ultimately chose not to join any of these clubs temporarily.
This summer, he also held talks with Genoa and Fiorentina. However, various sources claim that he turned down both clubs as they failed to meet his wage demands.
TEAMtalk reports that De Gea is seeking a contract worth £5 million a year, equivalent to £80,000 a week. His “unrealistic” wage demands exceeded Genoa’s budget, while Fiorentina could only offer a contract worth £4 million a year.
