On July 14th, Napoli head coach Conte attended a press conference where he discussed team objectives, training plans, and other topics.
Regarding last season when Napoli finished 10th, but there is optimism that Conte can lead the team back into the top three of Serie A after taking charge:
Conte: “It’s impossible to close the gap in two days. Last season, we were 41 points behind Inter, 22 points behind Milan, and 18 points behind Juventus—that’s reality. When you predict rankings next time, be a bit more rational and reasonable, or you’ll be laughed at.”
“Face the reality of the gap. We lost key players like Zielinski, and I don’t know how our summer transfer window will end; perhaps we might lose our best players. Let’s talk less and do more. We had a dark year, and what we need to focus on now is regaining our form and getting back into the Champions League.”
Regarding conceding 48 goals last season:
Conte: “I don’t think it was the fault of the goalkeeper; it was an issue with the entire team’s defensive system. Compared to two years ago, our defense lacks aggression. We need to regain that passion, because when you defend with passion, the outcome will be different. Details make the difference, and it was those 48 conceded goals that prevented us from playing in the Champions League.”
Regarding the impact of last year’s poor performance on the players:
Conte: “I told them not to overthink it and not to dwell on the past. Some are indeed disappointed, but don’t forget that we also have the experience of winning two years ago.”
Regarding transfer plans:
Conte: “Sensible transfers can enrich our tactics and strengthen the team. Even though we only finished 10th last year, we still signed players like Buoncristiano, which shows that Napoli has great appeal. We must make full use of this and improve our transfer work.”
Regarding Kvaratskhelia and Di Lorenzo:
Conte: “I understand Kvaratskhelia’s disappointment with his ranking. All I can say is that I’m doing my best to mediate, and it’s working well. The team cannot afford to lose him. As for Di Lorenzo, relations between the team and him were tense last year, but they are both honest people, full of integrity.”
Regarding tactics for the new season:
Conte: “We need to play more balanced football. Balance between attack and defense is crucial. We are evaluating two formations: a three-man defense and a four-man defense. We could try a 4-4-2 formation, placing a midfielder alongside the center forward, and Buoncristiano is versatile enough to fit into either a three-man defense or a four-man defense.”
Regarding midfield player deployment:
Conte: “Lobotka and Anguissa complement each other well, and their playing styles are mutually beneficial. I believe this is currently the best choice. But players like Kayode are also energetic, and I won’t reveal too much, except to say that I have a plan and will make the final decision during training.”
