The prominent Portuguese media outlet, Record, reports that Francisco Conceição, the Portuguese star who has been making waves at the Euros, has a surprisingly low release clause which is about to expire.
Francisco Conceição is the fourth son of legendary Portuguese footballer, Sergio Conceição (previously translated as Conçeicao), the former Parma, Lazio, and Inter Milan player. He has emerged as the biggest surprise for the Portuguese national team in 2024. The 21-year-old made his international debut only in March and, in his second match (a 4-2 victory over Finland), delivered an impressive hat-trick of assists, capturing significant attention.
During the Euro tournament, young Conceição played a total of 181 minutes, scoring a goal against the Czech Republic. Additionally, he was notable for successful dribbles (7 times), creating shooting opportunities (6 times), and generating clear-cut chances (3 times). His performances have caught the eye of clubs like Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund, and RB Leipzig.
Conceição’s contract with Porto runs until 2029, but it includes a €30 million release clause, which is considered too low for an international-level talent. However, activating this clause isn’t straightforward, as its validity ends on July 15th. After this date, the release fee will rise to €45 million. Portuguese media anticipates that another club might attempt to trigger the clause on the first working day next week. Porto’s new director is keen to retain young Conceição, but ultimately, the decision lies with the player himself.
Francisco Conceição started his training at Porto at the age of 16. In 2022, he transferred to Ajax, before returning to Porto via a loan-to-buy agreement for the 2023-24 season. In April, Porto secured his rights for €10 million, plus a 20% sell-on clause. Operating primarily as a right winger but occasionally on the left, Conceição scored 8 goals and provided 8 assists across 44 matches in the Portuguese league, Champions League, and cup competitions, contributing to the team’s Portuguese Cup triumph last season.
