In an interview with the British newspaper The Times, UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin stated that those who have insulted England’s manager, Gareth Southgate, and the media should apologize for “insulting and mocking England’s greatest ever coach.”
Čeferin expressed his anger and disbelief at some fans throwing plastic beer cups at Southgate after England’s draw against Slovenia. Supporting the 53-year-old English coach, he said, “In my view, Gareth Southgate is England’s most successful (original term used was best ever) coach in history, yet he had to endure such treatment after the match. It’s shameful. Despite the match not being perfect, England did not lose; however, the coach was mocked and insulted. I hope some people in the media will apologize, although I’m not holding my breath.”
Looking ahead to the upcoming Euro final, Čeferin commented that Spain has been impressive, but England continues to improve: “It will be a thrilling final. In my opinion, Spain has played the best football of the tournament, not just because of their young players, but also due to the excellent performances by Rodri and Fabian Luis. On the other hand, England has very talented players, and I believe they’ve been improving from game to game, becoming a stronger team.”
Čeferin also emphasized that Euro 2024 has been a successful tournament: “It’s been a fantastic competition, with great fans and excellent venues. Such major events are one of the things that can inspire people and rekindle a sense of patriotism. Fans traveling across different locations, enjoying football, and always treating each other with friendliness – it’s really wonderful.”
