In the final of the European Championship, England faces Spain. Prior to the match, Spanish newspaper AS wrote that England’s captain, Kane, is a champion’s pariah, and this time, the Spanish team will determine whether Kane can finally place a championship trophy in his showcase.
As captain of the English team at age 30, Kane has yet to win a single title. While playing for Tottenham, he reached several finals with the team but lost them all. After joining Bayern Munich, he made it to one final but also lost. The final of the European Championship presents Kane with another chance to break his title drought.
Regarded as the best “number 9” in British football history, Kane is unfamiliar with the feeling of lifting a championship trophy, be it for his club or the national team. Despite enduring criticism during this European Championship, his three goals proved crucial in England’s journey to the final.
At Tottenham, he lost the League Cup final against Chelsea, finished as Premier League runners-up, and lost the Champions League final against Liverpool. In 2021, Kane experienced two more final defeats with both Tottenham and England. To alter his fate, Kane opted to join German powerhouse Bayern Munich. However, at Bayern, Kane became a runner-up in various competitions. The emergence of Bayer Leverkusen perpetuated Kane’s title-less curse.
After eliminating the Netherlands in the semi-finals of the European Championship and advancing, Kane renewed his pursuit of a championship. “We have one more game to play, and we must achieve our goal in the final,” he said. Yet, Spain stands as another obstacle to Kane’s dreams. De la Fuente’s team will decide if Kane’s trophy cabinet will ever contain a championship trophy.
