On July 11, Brazilian football legend Rivaldo strongly backed Vinicius Jr. for the Ballon d’Or award, while expressing his dissatisfaction with the Selecao’s performance in the Copa America.
Rivaldo in support of Vinicius Jr.: “In this year’s Ballon d’Or race, Vinicius Jr. should be the frontrunner, given that he has won every competition he has participated in. However, the ongoing Copa America and Euro tournaments might sway the Ballon d’Or voting, leading people to consider other candidates. But even if Brazil is eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Copa America, I still believe Vinicius Jr. deserves the Ballon d’Or.”
Rivaldo then criticized this Brazilian squad: “The criticism directed at Brazil is justified, and the players must take responsibility. For Brazil, this Copa America campaign was a disgrace, and our players need to work harder and put in more effort. Many of our players lack experience in major international tournaments, and opponents no longer fear Brazil as they once did.”
Rivaldo also criticized Brazil’s personnel adjustments: “The coach made late substitutions, removing experienced players but leaving 17-year-old Endrick on the pitch, who could not save the team. Why were important players like Rodrigo, Rafinha, and Paqueta taken off before the penalty shootout? Have you ever seen Messi or Ronaldo being substituted before a penalty shootout? During my participation in the Copa America and two World Cups, I was never taken off early.”
Rivaldo suggested Brazil should call up more players from domestic leagues: “We must call up more players from the Brasileirao, just as Scolari did during the 2002 World Cup. Coaches frequently attend Brasileirao matches but only select 1-2 players from it, which makes no sense.”
