In this edition of the UEFA Euro, the performance of the Spanish team was evident to all. Not only did they advance from the group stage with a perfect winning record, but they also eliminated Georgia, Germany, France, and England in the subsequent knockout rounds without requiring penalty shootouts, securing the championship title with an unblemished record. The last team to achieve a perfect victory at the UEFA Euro was the 1984 French national team.
In 1984, the UEFA Euro was hosted by France. The host nation defeated Denmark, Belgium, and Yugoslavia in the group stage, advancing with a perfect record. As there were only eight teams participating in the 1984 UEFA Euro, qualifying from the group stage meant securing a spot in the semifinals. In the semifinal, France overcame Portugal after extra time with a 3-2 scoreline. In the final, they triumphed 2-0 against Spain, clinching the title with a perfect record.
Since then, no team had managed to win the UEFA Euro with a perfect record until the arrival of Luis de la Fuente’s Spanish squad. In this edition’s group stage, Spain was grouped with Italy, Croatia, and Albania. They defeated Croatia 3-0, Italy 1-0, and Albania 1-0, respectively.
Advancing to the round of 16, Spain overwhelmed Georgia 4-1, storming into the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinal, Spain defeated the host nation Germany 2-1, securing their place in the semifinals. During the semifinal, Spain again won 2-1 against France, reaching the final. In the ultimate showdown, Spain delivered another impressive performance, defeating England 2-1 and becoming the second team, following France in 1984, to win the UEFA Euro with a perfect record.
Notably, this is the fourth time (1964, 2008, 2012, 2024) that Spain has lifted the UEFA Euro trophy, surpassing Germany (three times) as the team with the most victories in the history of the tournament. Additionally, Spain scored 15 goals in this edition of the UEFA Euro, setting a new record in the tournament’s history.
