As the F1 season progresses, the driver market dynamics are constantly shifting. For Chinese fans, the focal point is Zhou Guanyu’s seat for the upcoming season – the first Chinese Formula One driver. Zhou addressed this issue in an interview, revealing that his team has engaged in discussions with several F1 outfits. He hopes to finalize a deal soon and doesn’t want to put all his eggs in one basket, as that would leave him at a disadvantage.
Zhou commented, “I’m considering all the options. Of course, Alfa Romeo is still one of them, but I’m also weighing which choice would be best for my future.”
The driver market is currently characterized by swift and intricate changes, making it crucial to decide on next season’s plans early. Waiting for other drivers’ contracts to be settled could potentially put Zhou in a vulnerable position.
Zhou explained, “Due to the nature of the driver market, starting preparations early is key. Obviously, I’ve entrusted this matter to my agent. We’ve already started talks with a few teams to understand who aligns best with my interests, who has the most potential, or who I might want to join in the coming years. Nothing is decided yet; we’re just waiting to see what’s best.”
Regarding his future with the Audi F1 team, Zhou didn’t rule out the possibility, stating, “Yes, we’re in communication with Seidl and the people at Audi. I don’t think they’ll make a decision anytime soon, as they have options. Naturally, my teammate and I remain in the running. Things won’t develop rapidly in the next few weeks, I can assure you. We’re discussing the matter, and they still show interest. So never say never – let’s see how it unfolds.”
When reflecting on his future in the F1, Zhou displayed confidence in his abilities, asserting, “I don’t feel much pressure, nor do I believe this will be my last year. I’m still working hard. I don’t feel limited to one team; there are several interested in me. So, it’s about making things happen.”
Additionally, with Esteban Ocon recently announcing his split from Alpine F1 Team at the end of the season, Zhou’s chances of joining Alpine in the next season have significantly increased. As a Renault Academy driver and with proven teamwork experience alongside his teammate, Zhou’s strong race pace, which is a sought-after quality for Alpine, could prove to be a valuable asset.
