Recently, WBC super lightweight champion Devin Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) announced to the media his intention to sue former WBC interim lightweight champion “Flash” Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) for dishonest conduct in their bout, alleging that Garcia not only weighed in overweight but also used the performance-enhancing drug Ostarine.
Last week, the New York State Athletic Commission imposed a one-year suspension on Garcia and fined him over a million dollars, which was paid to Golden Boy Promotions. In response, Haney believes the punishment is too lenient and should result in a lifetime ban instead. Furthermore, Garcia’s fines didn’t go into his account but to Golden Boy’s.
Devin Haney said, “This fight cost me a lot of money, and Ryan Garcia should be held accountable. Our signed contract for the battle clearly stated the requirement for a clean fight, which he didn’t fulfill. He should definitely compensate for that. Not only do I want a rematch with him in the ring, but I also want to fight him outside of it. After all, I’m a businessman.”
A few days ago, Haney wrote to the WBC requesting a one-year break, resulting in the organization stripping him of his full welterweight title and bestowing upon him the title of “Champion in Recess.”
