On July 2nd, local time, the second day of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships concluded with one win and one loss for the two Chinese players in action. Wang Xinyu secured her third victory over Tomova this season, advancing to the round of 64 at Wimbledon for the second consecutive year. Bai Zhuoxuan fell in straight sets to British player Dart in the first round.
Wang Xinyu
Wang Xinyu triumphed over Tomova in a three-set battle 7-6(4)/3-6/6-0, securing her second main-draw singles win at Wimbledon. After a tough first-round victory, Wang will face No. 5 seed Pegula in the next round, marking their first encounter. Pegula, who withdrew from the clay season due to a rib injury, made a successful return last month, winning her first grass court title at the WTA500 Berlin, indicating strong form and confidence. Can Wang Xinyu pull off an upset against the Top 10 opponent? We’ll have to wait and see.
Bai Zhuoxuan
Bai Zhuoxuan, who qualified for the main draw for the second consecutive year, lost 4-6/0-6 to world No. 100 Dart in the opening round. Bai gained fame at Wimbledon last year with her first Grand Slam main-draw win, but she has now bowed out in the first round of the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon this year. Her ranking will drop out of the Top 100 after Wimbledon, and she will need to qualify for the US Open later in the season.
Novak Djokovic
Serbian tennis great Novak Djokovic, returning to Wimbledon less than a month after knee surgery, dominated Czech player Korda, losing only five games to progress to the second round. Both women’s singles favorites Swiatek and Rybakina advanced safely. Sixth seeds Rublev and Muchova were both eliminated in their respective singles draws.
Muchova, the defending champion, lost in the first round to world No. 83 Badosa, becoming the first women’s singles titleholder to fall in the opening round since Graf in 1994. Given Muchova’s recent form, it was not considered a major upset. Muchova has had few standout performances this season and recently retired from the Berlin tournament due to injury. She will fall out of the Top 10 following Wimbledon.
