June 29 update: According to renowned sports journalist Adrian Wojnarowski, the Golden State Warriors and Chris Paul have agreed to push back the guarantee date for his $30 million salary in the 2024-25 season to the start of free agency.
The deadline to lock in Paul’s contract was originally this Friday, but the extension until Sunday grants the Warriors a brief window to pursue potential trades.
Despite the financial strain, the Warriors could still waive Paul, sources say, but the team is looking to assist in securing Paul a suitable landing spot elsewhere if a trade can be found.
Given the current landscape, any deal involving Paul’s contract would likely necessitate an All-Star caliber player in return.
Paul, who turned 39 in May, played 58 games for the Warriors last season, averaging 9.2 points, 6.8 assists, and 3.9 rebounds in 26.4 minutes per game, primarily as a reserve. He joined the Warriors in the offseason last year as part of the trade that sent Jordan Poole to the Washington Wizards, with Golden State hoping he would serve as a reliable backup point guard.
