According to Spanish outlet Relevo and French newspaper L’Équipe, the quarter-final matches of the UEFA Euro saw record-breaking viewership in Spain and France.
Based on data provided by the Spanish television audience measurement company Barlovento Comunicación, the quarter-final clash between Spain and Germany attracted a total of 11.7 million unique viewers, with Spain eventually eliminating the hosts Germany 2:1 after extra time. The final average audience share was 67.9%, peaking at 71.8% when Merino scored the decisive goal in extra time. The most-watched Spanish national team match remains the 2012 UEFA Euro final, where Spain defeated Italy 4:0, with an 83.4% viewing rate.
From the French audience measurement company Médiamétrie, it is reported that 12.7 million TV viewers in France tuned in for the quarter-final fixture against Portugal, marking the highest viewership for the French team in this Euro tournament. However, compared to the previous edition, there has been a noticeable decline in ratings for the French national team. In the 2021 UEFA Euro, France’s matches against Germany, Hungary, and Portugal drew 15.1 million, 12.3 million, and 15.6 million viewers, respectively; while their loss to Switzerland was watched by over 16.3 million viewers.
