On July 4th, Sky Sports journalist Ron Walker addressed Cristiano Ronaldo’s performance in the ongoing European Championship through his column. The commentator wrote, “In his 11th major international tournament, Ronaldo remains the focal point of the Portuguese team, but unlike the previous 10 events, he hasn’t fully unleashed his individual prowess in this edition.”
The writer pointed out, “The 39-year-old has taken 60 free kicks in major tournaments with just one goal, which is undoubtedly astonishing. However, the ironic question that Ronaldo’s status as a six-time Ballon d’Or winner raises is – if not him, then who else would step up to take them?”
Ronaldo has acknowledged that this is his last Euro, but Walker bluntly states that such a performance wouldn’t satisfy Portuguese fans.
Commenting on Portugal’s free-kick struggles, the journalist adds, “The awkward statistic around set pieces has long been an ailment for the Portuguese team. Neither Ronaldo nor Portugal can afford to dwell on past successes or rely solely on past highlights, just as a singer repeating the same song would eventually bore the audience.”
