On July 2nd, English Premier League (EPL) club Wolverhampton Wanderers showed significant interest in Danish goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel. As of July 1st, Schmeichel’s contract with Belgian side Anderlecht expired, making him a free agent.
Wolves are considering their options in goal but have yet to make any concrete moves. Reports suggest that Schmeichel is keen on a return to the EPL after spending one season each in France with Nice and Belgium with Anderlecht.
The veteran goalkeeper expressed his desire to return to England’s top flight to the media following Denmark’s 1-1 draw against England in a Euro group match, referring to the Premier League as his “second home.”
At 37, Schmeichel’s impressive performances for the Danish national team have further enhanced his value. Despite Denmark’s elimination by host Germany in the Euro Round of 16, his displays were noteworthy.
Recently, Schmeichel disclosed that he turned down an offer from Saudi Arabia, as he is eager to return to Leicester City, where he became a legend. There, he helped the club win the 2016 EPL title, making 479 appearances.
During the January transfer window, Schmeichel was a target for Nottingham Forest, but a move away from Anderlecht failed to materialize due to various reasons.
Belgian media reported that Schmeichel had an option to extend his contract with Anderlecht by one year.
It’s understood that Anderlecht wished to trigger this clause, but Schmeichel declined and informed the club he would make a decision after the Euros.
Anderlecht missed out on qualification for the 2024-25 UEFA Champions League, losing their chance in the final round of last season. As a result, if Schmeichel chooses to stay, Anderlecht might struggle to meet his wage demands. Moreover, without participation in Europe’s top club competition, the club’s appeal to Schmeichel lessens.
The son of Danish and Manchester United goalkeeping legend Peter Schmeichel, Kasper Schmeichel has made over 700 club appearances and has 105 caps for the Danish national team in his career.
