In the quarterfinals of the UEFA Euro, Ólmo opened the scoring, followed by a late equalizer from Wirtz in the 89th minute, and Merino’s match-winning goal in extra time. Ultimately, Spain advanced to the semifinals with a 2-1 victory over Germany.
All three goalscorers in this match were substitutes. Notably, 21-year-old Wirtz became the youngest player ever to score for Germany in a Euro knockout game.
This marks the fourth time in Euro history that three different substitute players have scored in a single match. The previous instances were in 1996 when Russia played the Czech Republic, in 2020 with Italy against Austria, and in 2021 during Croatia’s clash with Spain.
Germany’s elimination confirms the ongoing curse for Euro host nations, as the last time a host country won the tournament was France in 1984.
