On July 4th, German international Ilkay Gundogan was interviewed by Spanish newspaper AS.
How do you rate Spain’s performance?
“They’ve been the standout team so far. I like how they dominate possession, but I’m curious to see how they react when we have the ball.”
Are they difficult to defend against when you have possession?
“You’d have to ask Guardiola about that. At Manchester City, he taught us how to defend without the ball and how to regain it.”
Are Yarmolenko and Nico Williams unstoppable?
“They’ve had great tournaments, but we won’t mark them individually. We’ll use a collective defensive approach to stop them. And we’ll use our attack to force them back, because the best defense is often an offensive one.”
Was Germany underprepared?
“Not at all, honestly. The team is in good shape. We’re grateful for the fans’ support, which keeps us focused.”
Do you feel a lot of pressure?
“I’m quite good at handling pressure.”
You received a lot of criticism last month.
“That’s part of it, both from outside and self-criticism. I’m very demanding of myself. Luckily, I’ve been performing well since the start of the Euros.”
How do you feel playing closer to the box?
“Comfortable, very comfortable. Everyone has their role to play, and everyone is crucial.”
Toni Kroos is playing so well, yet he’s retiring?
“He’s definitely one of the best in German history. It would be amazing to win the Euros with him before he retires. Of course, it’s a dream that requires hard work and steps taken together.”
What do you think of Musiala?
“Technically, he’s number one in our team. I often say that Musiala will win the Ballon d’Or one day, not to put pressure on him, but I know his quality. Personality-wise, he’s humble and a great guy.”
