On July 6th, in the quarterfinals of the European Championship, Germany was eliminated by Spain with a 1-2 defeat after extra time. After the match, Germany’s head coach Julian Nagelsmann struggled to hide his disappointment, holding back tears during the post-match press conference.
Nagelsmann said in an interview, “In the second half and extra time, we were indeed the better team. We were closer to victory than Spain. In the last third of the game, we had the initiative, but unfortunately, we suffered a loss, which is very painful for me.”
Nagelsmann looks forward to redemption at the next World Cup: “This disappointment can only be redeemed in two years’ time at the World Cup. As a coach of the German team, I may never have the chance to compete as hosts again.”
Commenting on Germany’s future, Nagelsmann said, “I haven’t thought about what the plan will be next, because I didn’t expect us to be knocked out so soon. Now we’ll consider rebuilding the team and performing well in the UEFA Nations League.”
