On June 10th, as the European Championship approaches, Arsenal legend Paul Merson discussed Portugal’s squad and suggested that Cristiano Ronaldo should be rested for the first two matches, only to be introduced in the final group game.
Merson praised Portugal’s defensive pairing of Pepe and Dias, stating that Bruno Fernandes, as the team’s key player, should have a significant role on the pitch.
Commenting on Ronaldo, Merson continued, “Ronaldo remains the captain of Portugal. Although he continues to score consistently, it’s important to note that the Saudi Pro League is not at a high level. Therefore, I believe Portugal should bench Ronaldo for the opening two group fixtures and then bring him on for the last group match. If he performs well, he can continue in the knockout stages; that would be the logical approach.”
In this season, Ronaldo played 45 games for Al-Nassr, scoring 44 goals and providing 13 assists. In this European Championship, Portugal boasts a strong squad with championship aspirations. They will face Czech Republic, Turkey, and Georgia in the group stage.
