According to Spanish outlet Relevo today, Chelsea defender Cucurella is in line to replace Gayà in the Spanish national team due to a string of injuries.
Cucurella was called up to the national squad in March, marking his most recent inclusion and he traveled with the team for friendlies against Colombia and Brazil. Although he didn’t feature against Colombia, he played the full 90 minutes against Brazil and put in an impressive performance. However, a quadriceps injury subsequently kept him away from the national setup.
This season, Cucurella has featured in 26 matches for Chelsea, accumulating 2233 minutes, scoring one goal and providing two assists. Since his return from injury in March, he has played 14 games, starting 13 of them.
Nonetheless, Spain’s head coach Luis de la Fuente has several options to fill the position, including Guillermo Graceffa, Balde, Alba, García, Bernat, Pedraza, Azpilicueta, and Nacho.
