The Danish team is set to face hosts Germany in the Round of 16 of the European Championship, and ahead of the match, Danish midfielder Eriksen has expressed confidence that his team can continue their miraculous run as underdogs.
Under Head Coach Kasper Hjulmand, Denmark advanced to the knockout stage as group runners-up, marking their second consecutive escape from the group stage at the Euros. Eriksen played a pivotal role in Denmark’s group campaign, scoring against Slovenia and becoming the first Danish player to reach double digits in both shots and chances created in a single continental/world tournament (10 shots, 13 chances created). Despite Denmark’s previous five losses to host nations in the Euros, Eriksen believes this edition could witness a different outcome.
Eriksen commented, “There’s no bigger game than playing Germany in their own country in a knockout match. I’m really looking forward to it. Many people think we’re out, so now we can go all in without any pressure. I’m excited for the team to show we can compete with the best at the Euros. I believe we can beat the Germans, but it will take a collective effort to make that happen.”
Having become Denmark’s most-capped player with 133 appearances, surpassing teammate Simon Kjaer, the 32-year-old Eriksen said, “I’m incredibly proud of having earned so many caps for my national team. It feels surreal because the players on that list are legends of Danish football. Being alongside them is something I’ll look back on with a smile when I retire.”
