Sylvainio, a former Barcelona player, is currently the head coach of the Albania national team. Recently, he granted an exclusive interview to Spanish newspaper AS, discussing Albania’s preparations for the UEFA Euro.
Speaking about the upcoming Euros, Sylvainio said, “We are giving our all in friendly matches and preparations for the tournament, knowing that the road ahead is challenging, especially with Italy as our opening opponent, followed by tough matches against Croatia and Spain. The encounter with Spain holds a special meaning for me, and I’m eagerly anticipating the final showdown.”
Regarding Albania’s qualification for the Euros, Sylvainio believes it acknowledges the team’s efforts and presents a significant challenge. “Our group opponents are strong, and each one is determined to win. Although the task is arduous, it also validates our progress as a team,” he remarked.
When assessing his players, he praised their skills, saying, “Albanian players possess excellent technical abilities, are adept at ball control, and are passionate about attacking football. Many of them play abroad, in leagues like Spain and Italy, which has exposed them to diverse football cultures, enhancing their technical and tactical understanding.”
Addressing the expectations for underdogs to create upsets, Sylvainio pointed out, “Recent surprises in football demonstrate that with teamwork, technological application, and individual improvement, so-called ‘weaker’ teams can significantly close the gap with top teams. In a short tournament like the Euros, every match presents a new opportunity, and anything can happen.”
On the much-discussed young Spanish talent Raming Yarma, Sylvainio commented, “Comparing any player to Messi is exaggerated, given my fortunate experience of playing alongside him. However, Yarma possesses all the attributes of a top player: speed, left-footed skills, goal-scoring, and assisting abilities, plus the advantage of youth. For us, he is undoubtedly a threat that must be taken seriously.”
